Megamalai Travel Guide: Everything You Need to Know Before You Go
If your dream is a quieter hill station that is a long way out of the traffic and crowds and overtourism, then Megamalai will definitely be on your list. The Western Ghats of Tamil Nadu harbor a gem that has not yet succumbed to commercial tourism; that is Megamalai. With misty mountains and lush plantations of tea and gentle waterfalls, it is the perfect escape for people who love nature and those who want to relax.
I visited Megamalai with a few friends a few days ago, but to be honest, I ended up in a sort of secret paradise. In this article, I’ll show you what all the basics are that will help you prepare for your trip – how to get and, to where go, and where to spend the night, what activities to do, and some useful travel tips based on my own experience.
📍 Where Is Megamalai?
Megamalai, or ‘High Wavys,’ is a hill station in the Theni district in Tamil Nadu. It is on or around the Kerala border in the Western Ghats and is 1500 meters above sea level. It is surrounded by forests, tea estates, wildlife, and a peaceful mountain environment.
Megamalai is unique in its virgin beauty. Unlike famous tourist places such as Ooty or Kodaikanal, Megamalai is quiet and devoid of commercial crowds. It’s best if you are looking for a quiet nature retirement.
🚗 How to Reach Megamalai
Megamalai belongs to the adventure. The rest is quite choppy, so brace up. But trust me, the beauty of this place is priceless versus the world over.
- By Air: Less than two hours’ travel time from the airport for landing there is Madurai International Airport is located at 120 km away. Then you can use a cab or you can use a Theni bus.
- By Train: The nearby Railway station, which is equally connected to Chennai, Bangalore, & coimbatore, is Madurai.
- By Road: Theni town is about 45km away from Megamalai. The first 30km is flat, but the last 15km can be very rough and is best comfortable in the local jeep. We had to leave our vehicle and hire a jeep at the forest check-post – a jolty, but exciting ride!
🏡 Where to Stay in Megamalai
Megamalai houses are minimally comfortable. There are no star hotels with frills, but you will see forest bungalows, tea estate guest houses, and local homestays, giving you an authentic stay.
Some recommended stays:
- Cloud Mountain Bungalow – Great views, local food, and a tea garden mood.
- Forest Guest Houses – People run, but very basic and very peaceful.
- Homestays – Kind hosts and home cooking. A pre-booking is advisable, especially on weekends and on holidays.
🌿 Best Places to Visit in Megamalai
Something is soothing to watch mist roll over hills, or walk through tea plantations. Here are some top attractions:
1. Tea Estates
Meadows of tea bushes spread to endless rows. You may be lucky and watch people plucking tea leaves and even visit a small factory (ask your host for directions).
2. Megamalai Wildlife Sanctuary
Home of elephants, leopards, Indian gaurs, and various birds. We saw a large squirrel in a tree while drinking chai – amazing moment!
3. Manalar Dam and Iravangalar Dam
Picturesque views with peaceful water surrounded by greenery. Excellent for photos and soundless meditation.
4. Maalaikadai and Suruli Falls
These are must-dos if you want to put up with waterfalls. Come after the rains for the best flow. The sound of just the water is so soothing.
5. Highwave Forest Viewpoint
From this point onward, you can see Kerala’s plains on one side and the hills of Tamil Nadu on the other.
🕒 Best Time to Visit Megamalai
The best time to visit is from October through to March. It is cool weather, less rain, and normally the sky is pleasant. Avoid the peak monsoon season (June-September) since the roads tend to be slippery and more difficult to maneuver.
🍲 What to Eat in Megamalai
There are not many restaurants in Megamalai, thus most food is going to be from your stay or your homestay host. What you can expect are simple but delicious South Indian food, rice, sambar, rasam, vegetables, and even some non-veg options.
Pro tip: Make sure you let your host know what you want ahead of time, or that you are a vegetarian. Also, bring some snacks in case.
🧳 Travel Tips for Megamalai
Some tips according to my experience (friendly):
Carry Cash: There is no ATM in Megamalai, and the mobile signal is poor, for online payments will not work.
Pack Warm Clothes: It is even the case that evenings can be cold in Summer.
Carry a Power Bank: There is electricity, but power cuts are not unusual.
Don’t Litter: Please make Megamalai clean and green. Avoid using plastic.
Hire a Local Guide: For more serious forest expeditions or observation of nature, the option is safer and more interesting with a local guide.
💭 My Personal Experience
We sat on a small bench outside our homestay one night, enjoying tea as the sun set behind the hills. No mobile, no noise, only the noise of birds returning to their nests. That moment stayed with me. It shone on me how peaceful life is at its own pace.
Megamalai isn’t just a destination; it’s an experience. Ideal for people who want to escape the city chaos and spend a lot of time with nature, with a lot of leisurely living their life.
