Wayanad-The Ultimate Travel Guide
Tired of all the stress of city life and searching for an escape into an oasis, which is overflowing with green hills, the plummeting waterfalls, and the refreshing wind from the mountains? Without much of a frill, then, here it is, a district with a stunning landscape indeed, Wayanad, hidden in the north-eastern corner of Kerala state. Trust me, once you are other, you will wonder why it took so long to start coming.
I had been to Wayanad last year, along with my friends, and even to date, whenever we are together, we talk so much about how rejuvenating it was. From hiking in forests to chai drinking in the rain, it was the sort of trip that sticks with you forever.
This guide is especially written for all the people planning their very first trip to Wayanad, even if you come from Kerala or Tamil Nadu, or Karnataka, or even if you are from a distant place.
📍 Where is Wayanad
Wayanad is a state found on the border of states of Karnataka and Tamil Nadu, of Kerala State. It is a hill district, a part of Western Ghats and, therefore, a cold atmosphere, green vegetation and a lot of scenic beauty.
But if you are travelling from Bangalore, it's nearly 270 km –a known destination for the weekends. About 85 km from Kozhikode (Calicut) it is. The roads are fine, and the driving is all part of the adventure.
🕓 Best Time to Visit Wayanad
October–May is the best period. The climate is nice, which is good for sightseeing and other activities outdoors. Monsoon (June to September) gives an enchanting look to the place, but on winding roads, cars skid, and as one walks in the hills, leeches are a big problem. If you love the rain as I do, then go for it. Just take a raincoat and waterproof shoes!
🏞️ Must-Visit Places in Wayanad
My best choices are as follows. Do not leave these out in your itinerary.
1. Edakkal Caves
You climb a rocky hill and bang, there appears before you, an ancient carving going to the Stone Age! Such caves are mysterious and intriguing, especially if you like history a little bit.
2. Chembra Peak
If you are fond of trekking, this is a must. The trek ends at a heart-shaped lake that is pretty famous on Instagram. It is not an easy hike, but the views from the top are? Totally worth it.
3. Banasura Sagar Dam
The biggest earthen dam in India is surrounded by hills and greenery. Here, you can have boat rides and even take a rest while admiring the beautiful scenery. It is also an ideal place for a family picnic.
4. Soochipara Falls
Another interesting point is called the Sentinel Rock Waterfalls. The water rains down from a distance, and one is able to walk through t
he Forest to the bottom. A little bit slippery during monsoon, but very refreshing.
5. Pookode Lake
This is a calm and quiet freshwater lake. You can do pedal boating, sightseeing in the garden, and a small aquarium is close to the place. Ideal for a peaceful evening.
6. Wildlife Sanctuary
Fortunately, if you are a lucky person, you can see the elephants, deer, or even a tiger. At one of our jeep safaris, we saw a pack of wild boars very exciting!

💡 Handy Travel Tips
- If you’re going to stay close to nature, bring mosquito repellent as well.
- Wake up early in the morning – fog disappears after the morning time and most places are closed by 6 PM.
- On trekking take proper shoes, carry a bottle of water and some snacks.
- Avoid littering. People who live near here are very protective of their environment and quite rightly.

❤️ Final Thoughts
Wayanad isn’t just about places. It’s a feeling. It is the morning fog, the chirping of birds, the friendly nature of the locals, and hot chai after a trek. If you are out to reconnect with nature… hey presto! This is it.
After my return from Wayanad, I felt that I was lighter, calmer, and more earth-connected. It is not a tourist trap; it is a healing experience.
