The Best Kerala Hill Stations for Trekking

Kerala Hill Stations for Trekking

For most individuals, the first thing that comes to their mind when they hear Kerala is backwater, coconuts, and cuisine. However, a few surprises may come as a shocker, and one of them is the fact that Kerala is a heaven for trekkers. The good news is that this beautiful state is not only meant for Beach Houseboats; it is also blessed with some of the fascinating Hill Stations where one can get to see greenery, cool breeze, and height.

This blog targets people who like taking a walk in the countryside, who like to wake up early in the morning to watch the sunrise from the top of the nearest hill, or just to leave the noisy city for a few hours. In this article, the author guides the readers through the most beautiful Kerala hill stations to trek, each with its own charm and appeal.

🏞️ 1. Munnar – A Trekker’s Favourite

So to start with, the first on probably the most familiar to most people. Contrary to what one may assume, Munnar is not only about tea gardens and couples’ escapades. It also offers great opportunities for trekking.

Popular trekking routes:

  • Meesapulimala Trek: It is closely related to the Nilgiri Hills and is the second-highest place in South India. The trail covers the terrain of shola forests, grasslands, besides passes through some tea estates. It is moderately difficult, but the scenery from the top is beautiful to behold.
  • Chokramudi Trek: Perfect for beginners. This is a half-day trek and the tourist can witness the great heights of Anamudi and Idukki Dams.
  • Lakshmi Hills: Rugged terrains, fogs, and silence: lack of disturbance makes the area perfect for a nature freak.

My experience: When it was my turn to trek through the clouds in the sky, my friend had suggested the Meesapulimala trek, and that’s what I wanted to do for the rest of my life.

🌲 2. Wayanad – Nature, Waterfalls, and Adventure

While talking about Kerala’s tourist spot, Wayanad, we come to know that the place has not been explored much. Because of this, the place is one that is characterized by little or no noise, which makes the environment rather serene.  They are familiar with dense growth of trees, plantation of spices and spice gardens, and tribal people. For those who like trekking and traveling to see the local life, the Wayanad district will be the best.

Best treks in Wayanad:

  • Chembra Peak Trek: This is the highest place in Wayanad and is considered one of the most famous trekking destinations. Halfway up, you will find a heart-shaped lake that should be the perfect place to take some pictures.
  • Banasura Hills: This trail is still fairly unknown, but it is a beautiful must-visit place. As a means of transport, it is useful for those who prefer less traffic.
  • Pakshipathalam Trek: This is a forest trail on which you may encounter endangered birds and animals. Therefore, it is possible to go with a guide.

Local vibe: Even Wayanad has beautiful treehouse stays. After a long, demanding hike, it is better to sit in a tree house with hot tea and breathe fresh air.

⛰️ 3. Vagamon – The Peaceful Hill Station

Vagamon is unlike Munnar or Wayanad – it is not too commercial and is known for its meadows, pine-woods, and gentle hills. You will find heaven in the mountains if you enjoy quiet, slow-paced trekking routes in Kerala.

Why choose Vagamon?

  • Mottakunnu Trek: A soft walk to rolling green meadows- it’s a favorite with nature lovers and photographers.
  • Murugan Mala: A spiritual radiator where you also go to a small temple at the top.
  • Ulipooni Wildlife Sanctuary Trails: Excellent for just sighting birds, butterflies, and getting peaceful forest paths.
  • Thangal Para: A sacred hill with a great view from above, and it’s also a moderate hike.

Vagamon is just for you if you are a starter or would like a family-friendly trekking destination.

🌳 4. Ponmudi – The Golden Peak

Not too far at 60 km from Thiruvananthapuram, Ponmudi is also a lesser-known Hill Station that’s ideal for a weekend trek. It is called The Golden Peak, and it’s really a joy to reach here — curvatures and beautiful views are there.

Trekking Experience:

  • Varayadumotta Trek: For serious trekkers, this is one of the “battling” and exciting treks in Kerala. The name is after the Nilgiri Tahr, or “Varaya,” a mountain goat.
  • Kallar-Meenmutty Trail: A jungle trek to the lovely Meenmutty Waterfalls.

Note: You might require forest permission for some routes; therefore, it would be wise to consult local guides.

🐘 5. Thekkady – For Forest Lovers

Periyar Wildlife Sanctuary is the destination for most people in Thekkady, but there are also some very good forest treks there. Thekkady will capture your heart if you are an animal lover, lover of trees, and nature walk.

Top trekking options:

  • Periyar Tiger Trail: A risky, guided trek that might involve camping inside the forest.
  • Border Hiking: This full-day trek, carried out by the forest department, runs down the Kerala-Tamil Nadu border.
  • Green Walk: A short nature stroll in the Periyar forest. There will be birds, butterflies, inching around, and sometimes even elephants!

Safety tip: Always hire an authorised guide in forest areas. It’s safer and you’ll learn a lot about the place.

🌄 6. Nelliyampathy – The Less Talked About Beauty

Nelliyampathy in Palakkad is among the least-advertised hill stations in Kerala. Flanked by coffee plantations and heavy forest, it is the perfect place for trekking and relaxing.

Why go to Nelliyampathy?

  • Seetharkundu Viewpoint Trek: Offers panoramic views of the valley below and the misty hills surrounding, everywhere.
  • Poab’s Organic Estate Trails: Have a walk in spice gardens and coffee estates while inhaling the fresh air of the mountains.

There would be hardly any crowd here, making it a good choice if you want to unplug yourself from the world.

🌧️ 7. Idukki – The Hidden Gem for Nature Lovers

The amazingly picturesque district of Idukki is rarely taken into account as a tourist destination. Riddled with hills, dams, and large forests, this is a great place to trek around.

Where to Trek in Idukki:

  • Ramakkalmedu: Famous as the “Land of Wind,” the place provides dramatic views of the western ghats and the nearby Tamil Nadu village.
  • Kalvari Mount: A tranquil trekking place to capture photo-moments over the Idukki Reservoir – it’s for photographers to enjoy.

I recall once going to hike to Ramakkalmedu during monsoon – the wind was so strong it felt as though I’d go soaring! It’s interesting and soothing at the same time.
