The people of Kerala recognize their land as 'God's Own Country'. The mesmerizing southern region of India hosts ideal weather conditions to combine beachfront wellness with spiritual aquatic retreats and strolling through tea plantation terrains.

This 7-day Kerala travel guide gives you the necessary directions to reach all essential destinations and offers personal expertise alongside vacation planning assistance. Let’s start, shall we?

🌴 Why Kerala?

A discussion on Kerala's worth visiting follows before exploring the actual itinerary.

  • Lush green landscapes 🌿
  • Peaceful backwaters 🛶
  • Fresh seafood joins delicious spicy fare as major culinary attractions in Kerala.
  • The area attracts tourists with its welcoming population and its active cultural environment.
  • Within Kerala, you can explore beaches and hills and forests, and waterfalls within its state borders.

In December of last year, I planned a Kerala trip with my parents. Our expectations were unclear about this vacation, but we found it to be our most amazing travel experience yet. All types of travelers, including families and single people, and groups of friends, will find entertainment in Kerala's attractions.

Day 7: Take your flight back to Kochi from there.

🛬 Day 1: Arrive in Kochi – A Mix of Old and New

Arrive first at Kochi (Cochin) airport. Major Indian cities connect through flights to this airport.

Spend your day exploring:

  • Experience colonial architecture and street art attractions while walking through Fort Kochi.
  • Unique to Kochi, you can find its signature Chinese Fishing Nets.
  • Jew Town, along with the Synagogue, provides visitors the chance to explore history through shopping activities
  • At Kerala Kathakali Centre, viewers can witness a classical stage performance of traditional dance.

Kochi brings together Kerala's historical customs with its contemporary way of life. Taste traditional Kerala fish curry during your visit while experiencing the sea's calming air in the evening.

Tip: A visit to Fort Kochi through homestay accommodation will offer you a genuine local atmosphere.

🏞️ Day 2: Travel to Munnar – Into the Misty Hills

Your second day leads to Munnar after setting out from Kochi in a four to five-hour drive. During travel, you will encounter beautiful vistas combining hairpin bends alongside waterfalls and tea estates.

After arriving, spend some time relaxing while enjoying the mountain breeze.

Places to see:
  • Attend the Tea Museum to discover Kerala's storied tea heritage.
  • Pothamedu Viewpoint – panoramic views
  • Traditional tea outlets serve piping hot chai tea together with delicious crunchy snacks that you should not omit from your itinerary.

My dad, who normally refrains from tea purchases, made the unusual decision of buying two entire boxes of Munnar tea. That says something!

💧 Day 3: Explore Munnar – Waterfalls and Wildlife

Taken up with additional Munnar discovery today.

Must-visit spots:

  • Book early before visiting Eravikulam National Park to see the rare Nilgiri Tahr, which inhabits this site.
  • The Mattupetty Dam serves as both a boat riding destination and provides scenic landscape views.
  • Pedal boats float peacefully on Kundala Lake, offering visitors serenity at this peaceful destination.
  • Attukal Waterfalls present their best appearance following rainfall.

Tip: A light sweater should be part of your Munnar summer packing because the area stays cool during all seasons.

🌿 Day 4: Thekkady – Wildlife and Spice Trails

A drive to Thekkady takes 3 to 4 hours when coming from Munnar. The place specializes in three main activities: forest exploration and spice discoveries, along with adventurous wilderness experiences.
Things to do:

  • Boat tours in Periyar Wildlife Sanctuary give visitors a chance to see elephants if their luck is good.
  • Learn about cardamom and pepper, and other spices at a spice plantation tour.
  • Watch performers demonstrate Kalaripayattu, the traditional martial art of Kerala.

Tip: Locals can find natural spices at fresh prices in the spice markets of this location.

🛶 Day 5: All Aboard the Houseboat in Alleppey

Journey to Alleppey (Alappuzha) over 4 to 5 hours, then board a vintage Kerala houseboat.

Spend your day cruising the tranquil backwaters while you unwind without effort.

What you’ll enjoy:

  • Locals prepare delicious Kerala cuisine directly on board the boat, while fish curry should not be missed (don't miss the fish curry!).
  • Observing traditional life along the shores where residents engage in clothing washing and fish for dinner, while children wave from the boat to the shore.
  • Watching the water as the sun sets brings you a spellbinding feeling.

Personal memory: I sat on the deck with a coconut water in hand, feeling completely worry-free.

🏖️ Day 6: Kumarakom or Marari Beach – Time to Relax

Spend the entire day enjoying relaxation activities following your houseboat stay.

Option 1: Kumarakom

  • Kumarakom stands out because it features a bird sanctuary together with peaceful resort destinations.
  • The place suits visitors looking to experience tranquil backwater areas while observing birds.

Option 2: Marari Beach

  • The location offers tranquility with clean surroundings, which allows both long walking distances and stunning sunset views.
  • Marari Beach serves people who need an oceanfront experience before their departure.

Our family vacation ended at Marari beach as everyone built sandcastles while spending time with coconut water while watching waves on the shore.

✈️ Day 7: Return to Kochi – Goodbye, Kerala!

Travel back to Kochi during a 1.5 to 2-hour journey. Before your departure, you can use your remaining hours:

  • People visit this spot to purchase spices while collecting banana chips, along with purchasing souvenirs.
  • Tourists frequent Lulu Mall because it stands as one of India's largest shopping destinations.
  • Spend your last day eating at a great Kerala restaurant.

Kerala leaves your heart permanently, even though you bid farewell to the region.
